The month of May is upon us, and our team is still feeling the excitement from the Best of the Best Engagement Contest. One of the best parts of looking through thousands of photo submissions annually is that it allows us to compare photography trends from year to year. In this year’s competition, for example, we saw more direct flash than ever before. A year or two ago, battery-operated twinkle lights were the go-to prop, now lanterns have taken over. And even though the world has moved past the Covid-19 lockdowns, at-home engagement sessions still seem a popular and cozy choice.
Unsurprisingly, we also spot these trends while searching for the month’s top pics. But the images that really knock us off our feet are the ones that are timeless or distinct in their execution–even if “trendy” at first glance. Timelessness will always be a wedding photography quality couples seek. So our message this month is to not get distracted by the trends and fads sweeping social media. While they’re certainly fun to try and use for Instagram engagement, don’t forget who you are underneath. Work on defining your personal style and making it unique instead of using a shooting or editing style that blends in. It’s a surefire way to build brand identity and business longevity.
